Baffle step calculator

The baffle step occurs because a speaker radiates low frequencies into full space and high frequencies into half space. Set the baffle width and see the transition frequency (rule of thumb f ≈ 115 / width in m).

Why does this matter for the crossover?

Above the step the level is up to 6 dB higher than below. A crossover compensates with a baffle step circuit (a resistor with an inductor), otherwise the bass sounds thin.

Limits of the rule of thumb

The step also depends on driver position and edge shape. The app calculates it from the real baffle geometry.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the baffle step frequency?

As a rule of thumb f ≈ 115 / W, with W in metres. For a 25 cm baffle that gives about 460 Hz.

How large is the step?

Theoretically up to +6 dB between full and half space; in practice often 3–5 dB depending on edge and driver position.

How do I compensate it?

With a baffle step circuit in the crossover or actively with an equalizer – the app supports both.
